Cnoc na dTobar, meaning ‘Mountain of the Wells,’ is a 690-meter high mountain and an important pilgrimage site near Cahersiveen in County Kerry. It has been a sacred pilgrim site since prehistoric and medieval times. The mountain was also an important site in Pagan Ireland, long before Christianity arrived. It was the site of ancient mountain assemblies, especially the festival of Lughnasa. In 1885, Canon Brosnan, the parish priest of Cahersiveen, instructed fourteen crosses be built to mark the Stations of the Cross along the ancient trail on the mountain. The pilgrimage involves climbing to the summit, stopping at each of the Stations of the Cross along the way.
