Croagh Patrick is one of Ireland’s most famous pilgrimage sites, with a history dating back over 5,000 years. The tradition began with the pagans, when people gathered here to celebrate the beginning of the harvest season. In the 5th century, St Patrick is said to have fasted for 40 days at the summit in 441AD. Today, pilgrims climb the mountain on Reek Sunday, the last Sunday in July, with many traditionally making the climb barefoot as an act of penance. The mountain offers stunning views of Clew Bay and the surrounding Mayo countryside.
